Then the Lord said to Joshua, “Today I have rolled away the reproach of Egypt from
you.”
So the place has been called Gilgal* to this day.
Joshua 5:9
*[sounds like the Hebrew for ‘roll’]
God rolled away the shame of slavery from
their past. Once the new generation of Israelites acted on their commitment to God
by being circumcised, they were no longer slaves from Egypt, but God’s free people.
The label was gone. It was not their identity anymore.
They weren’t nomads anymore either, wandering
in the desert, seemingly lost and homeless. Now, they belonged to God and they
were coming home.
We all have a past of which we’re
ashamed. Either because of our parents’ sins or our own. We’ve been slaves to
sin, imprisoned by its heavy chains. We have been wandering nomads, lost and
afraid. But when we come to Christ for forgiveness and bow to Him as Lord, all
that falls away. There is no more reproach in Christ, no matter what you have done
in the past.
As you commit to prayer walking, the
enemy will bring up your past and try to shame you into believing your prayers
won’t be answered. That you’re not “holy” enough to do this magnificent work. That
is a lie. God invites all of us to participate
in His work. Whatever “Egypt” you’ve escaped to pursue the living God, it is
forgiven and exists no more. God has rolled away the disgrace of your past.
I love the song, “The Power of the
Cross” sung by Shelly E. Johnson. The lyrics remind us how the power of the
shed blood of Jesus Christ erases our past. The chains of sin are no match for
His mercy and grace. They just fall off. As you listen to this song, raise your
arms in praise to Jesus and let the shame you have carried melt away into the sea
of God’s forgetfulness.
