And as soon as the priests who carry
the ark of the Lord—the Lord of all the earth—set foot in the Jordan, its waters
flowing downstream will be cut off and stand up in a heap… Now the Jordan is at
flood stage all during harvest. Yet as soon as the priests who carried the ark
reached the Jordan and their feet touched the water’s edge, the
water from upstream stopped flowing. It piled up in a heap a great distance
away…while the water flowing down to the Sea…was completely cut off. So the
people crossed over opposite Jericho.
Joshua 3:13, 15-16
The spiritual leaders of the
Israelites, the Levites, set the example for the nation. Can you imagine what a
heavy responsibility that was? They showed faith and trust in God—enough to
step into the Jordan at flood stage.
That first step must have taken
courage. Especially since they were carrying God’s ark—a solid wooden box,
covered with pure gold. No hands free for swimming if necessary! But they
stepped out in faith and God rewarded their courage. Then the people crossed
over.
When
leaders lead, people will follow.
Who looks to you for leadership? Are
you a parent, elder sibling, boss, small group leader, teacher? Your faith is
proved by your actions.
What step of faith is God calling you
to take? Do you need to write a tithe check even though money is tight,
trusting God will provide for your needs? Do you need to have a conversation with
someone about something sensitive, even though you’re not sure how the other
person is going to respond? Do you have
a decision to make that might make you unpopular at work or home?
As you prayer walk today or in the
coming days, lay this out before the Lord. Pour out your fears and leave them
there with Him. He will show you what to do. Then step out, even when the water
swirls about you like a flood. God will clear a path for you and show you where
to step. And when those who look to you as their example see your faith, they
will be encouraged to do the same in their lives.
Who knows, we might start something. When
God’s people lead, others will follow, and take over the land for the glory of God.
Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil
with good.
